What happened when the M180 closed after car left road and caught fire

The M180 eastbound was reopened at around 4am after being closed when a car left the road and caught fire.

The closure was between Junction 3 (Scunthorpe, M181) and Junction 4 (Lincoln, A15) following the serious collision. The incident occurred at about 9.16pm on Saturday.

Humberside Police were present at the scene and led the response to the incident. Due to the severity of the collision the carriageway was expected to remain closed throughout the night.

National Highways had resources in attendance to assist with traffic management. Lane one (of two) was also closed on the westbound carriageway for a time between Junction 4 and Junction 3.

National roads information service Inrix said at 11.06pm: “M180 eastbound closed, stationary traffic due to serious accident, a car involved from J3 M181 ( Scunthorpe ) to J4 A15 (Scawby). A car has left the carriageway and caught fire – the motorway has been completely shut and is likely to remain closed well into the night, leaving some traffic trapped within the closure. Lane one (of two) was also shut westbound but has now reopened. ”

Diversions were also in operation until the reopening of the road. But at 4.03am today, national roads information service Inrix reported: “M180 eastbound reopened, earlier accident investigation work from J3 M181 (Scunthorpe) to J4 A15 ( Scawby ). ”
