Ukraine reports cyber attack on government websites

Ukraine has reported a major cyber attack on major government sites.

The education ministry said on Facebook that their page was not working properly due to a “global attack” that took place overnight.

Other websites downstairs were for ministers and foreign and emergency ministries.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Foreign Ministry’s website has temporarily posted a message in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish that appears to indicate that the plot was based on Ukraine’s Western alliance.

Ukrainian security agencies say no personal information has been released on the rise of the Internet on major government websites, adding that several of them have already returned online.

“The contents of the page have not been updated and according to preliminary information no information has been released,” the SBU said.

The SBU said a number of government websites, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, had been hijacked overnight but did not say who they believed was behind it.

It said it was “investigating the incident and gathering digital evidence”, adding that “many of the affected websites have already been restored” and that some will be back online soon.

In the meantime, the European Union is mobilizing “all its resources” to support Ukraine in the aftermath of the cyberattack, EU Commissioner Josep Borrell said.

Borrell said the EU’s political and security committee would meet later today to discuss the crisis, which he said “should be condemned.”

Borrell told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

“We are gathering all we have to help Ukraine deal with this type of cyberattack,” he said.

All EU governments were asked to participate, “although Ukraine is not a member” of the bloc.

Borrell said it was too early to “point the finger at anyone. We have no evidence.” But he added: “You can imagine who did that.

The cyberattack comes as a result of growing tensions between Russia and Western countries over the security of Ukraine and Kyiv has criticized Russian citizens with links to the Kremlin over what has happened in the past.

In 2020, the United States in October condemned six Russians linked to intelligence agents to carry out cyberattack attacks on Ukraine’s power grid.
