A tsunami alert is now operating throughout Tonga following the massive eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai submarine this evening.
There are reports that sirens are sounding in Nukualofa and police are urging people to relocate to higher ground.

One of the locals said RNZ A massive explosion occurred around 5.20pm, which lasted eight minutes and shook windows and sent ash into the air.
Strong waves crossed the Nuku’alofa shore and coastal roads and flooded goods.
One Witness saw the car floating.
The eruption yesterday triggered a tsunami alert, with waves up to 30cm high. That warning was issued early in the morning when the mountain appeared to have settled.
