The Netherlands relaxes coronavirus measures, but restaurants stay shut

AMSTERDAM – The Netherlands – first Europe to enter Lockdown as Omicron’s most common form of coronavirus spreads to Europe – it will reopen slightly on Saturday.

“We are entering a new phase of the epidemic … Omicron diversity has led to an epidemic,” new health minister Ernst Kuipers told a news conference Friday, adding that despite the increasing number of cases, “we are taking precautionary measures to reopen the country in other ways.”

The country is resting some of its resources with unnecessary shopping malls and affiliates such as barbers who are allowed to open until 5 a.m., fully closed from December 19. Restaurants and bars, however, should remain closed.

Universities and vocational colleges should be allowed to reopen their doors.

Prime Ministers Mark Rutte and Kuipers warned, however, that a break in the process would lead to an increase in the number of infections, which would make the finalists emphasize the need to wear face masks and risk exposure.

“Even with the current respite our examples show that we can have about 80,000 infections a day,” Rutte said. The RIVM Infectious Diseases Agency estimates that 31,207 people have been infected with the virus every day in the past seven days in a country of about 17.5 million people.

Support for closing methods has declined in recent weeks, with a number of unrelated demonstrations by retailers. Many retailers have become increasingly frustrated with the so-called border patrols – Dutch residents are evading security check-ups at visiting restaurants and restaurants in Germany and Belgium.

Rutte said the long-term plan of the COVID-19 national route would be unveiled next month, with Kuipers adding: “We hope to get to the point where we no longer need to close the newly opened sections.”

The government is meeting again to discuss other issues on January 25.
