Strong role for specific nutrition and supplements to enhance immunity against Covid-19

Over the past two years we have heard a lot about food, nutrition and Covid-19

However, there were no data on diet and prediction of Covid-19. Fortunately, scientific information from Covid-19 human and patient intervention studies has begun to emerge, he said. Dr. Conor Kerley (PhD, BSc), Founder and CSO at Phytaphix.

Curcuminoids are natural polyphenol enzymes found in turmeric. There are three curcuminoids: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Eight articles on curcuminoid interventions among Covid-19 patients describe safety and reduction of Covid-19 risk factors, including:

  • Reducing mortality.1,3,5,6
  • Reducing the need for oxygen treatment, ventilated ventilation and hospitalization.2,3,6
  • Inflammation reduction (TNF-α, CRP, IFN-γ, GM-SCF, and IL-1β, 6,17,18,21,23).1,3,6,7
  • Increased anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4,10, 35, TGF-β).5, 7
  • Multiplication of Treg cell frequencies5 and a frequent decrease in Th17 cells.6
  • Low gene expression associated with Th11,3,7 (IL-1β and 18, TNF-α, TBX21), Th21 (IL-6 and 18) and Th171,6,7 (IL-1β, 17,21, 23, GM-CSF, and RORγt).
  • Anti-inflammatory form of the gene5, 7 (FOX-P3, IL-10 and 35, TGF-β).
  • lymphocyte proliferation,2,4,5,7 depletion of neutrophils.7
  • Reducing D-dimer3 and thromboembolic episodes.1, 3
  • X-ray on the chest well.1, 3
  • Minor symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, dyspnea, myalgia, headache, anosmia, ageusia).1-8

Indeed, a meta-analysis from January 2022 reported: ‘The addition of curcuminoid led to a significant reduction in symptoms, duration of hospitalization and death. Curcumin supplementation may provide an effective and safe way to improve the effects of Covid-19 ”.9

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a special fat-soluble vitamin. After completing my PhD in vitamin D and respiratory disease, I published 12 vitamin D papers, including three blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials, two meta-analyzes, and I was the only author. preliminary data for vitamin D from Irish Covid-19 patients.

PubMed search with ‘vitamin D COVID’ yields 1,000 pages. Many were originally mental papers. Subsequent studies have shown a decrease in vitamin D in Covid-19 patients, but this should be interpreted with caution. Vitamin D deficiency affects more than 1 billion people!

In addition, triggering is possible when disease / inflammation can reduce the amount of vitamin D. In addition, there are side effects associated with vitamin D and Covid-19 deficiency, for example, obesity.

Recently, several studies on vitamin D in Covid-19 patients were published. Some did not mention the benefits, probably because of the adequate amount of vitamin D. Other trials in the Covid-19 also reported success, including seven blind, randomized, controlled trials.

Indian experiments showed significant reductions in fibrinogen and CRP as well as early viral clearance.10 Another reported significant reductions in CRP, LDH, IL-6, ferritin, and neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio.11 In the first dose test, elevated vitamin D led to a significant improvement in cough and ageusia (loss of taste).12 A recent experiment also showed a decrease in muscle mass with vitamin D supplementation.13

In addition, other methods monitor the effectiveness of calcidiol in Covid-19 patients. Calcidiol is the liver metabolite of vitamin D and the formula we test for, indicating the level of vitamin D. More from Spanish pilot research, he also noted the reduction in ICU approval and calcidiol supplementation.14

The same group conducted a cohort study and found that calcidiol treatment was associated with 84% the lowest hospital mortality rate of 30 days.15

Another study showed a significant decrease in neutrophil / lymphocyte counts as well as a tendency to reduce hospitalization and mortality.16 A retrospective study of all 15,968 Covid-19 patients hospitalized in Andalusia in 2020 also found that vitamin D and calcidiol interactions were associated with 25% and 33% increased survival.17 Indeed, a recent review of vitamin D for Covid-19 patients ‘demonstrates the beneficial role of vitamin D in the reception of Covid-19 patients in the ICU’.18

Magnesium and vitamin B12
Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic compounds, which regulate various body systems. Several steps in the metabolism of vitamin D require magnesium as a cofactor, including vitamin D binding to protein binding protein D, 25 (OH) D composition, a combination of 1,25D and the expression / initiation of vitamin D. Although magnesium is found in many foods healthy, unhealthy foods have caused magnesium to be absorbed.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin and a cofactor of two nutrients. Vitamin B12 is often ingested in omnivorous foods. However, poor digestion due to various factors has led to a deficiency of vitamin B12.

A preliminary study from Singapore, used vitamin D3 + magnesium + vitamin B12 in hospital patients with Covid-19 and reported that stiffness was reduced compared to standard care.19

Ashwagandha is one of the most important herbal remedies in Ayurvedic medicine. A 16-week, human-controlled, prophylactic study also reported that Ashwagandha significantly reduced Covid-19 risk.20 Another study on human intervention also reported that many herbal remedies containing Ashwagandha reduced the risk of Covid-19, including significant clinical changes and reduction of inflammatory causes (hsCRP, IL-6, TNF-α),21 and faster recovery of Covid-19 compared to standard care.22

Previous research has shown that Ashwagndha is safe and has anti-inflammatory effects on health education23-26 and TB patients.27 In addition, a number of human studies have shown that Ashwagandha is anxious and reduces symptoms of insomnia, fatigue, and depression.

Quercetin is a type of phytonutrient called flavonoid. It is found in many fruits (such as apples), vegetables (like red onions) and tea leaves. A 20-week, human, prophylactic study also reported that a multi-dose regimen, including quercetin, significantly reduced Covid-19 risk.28

The following three studies on human intervention are said to have reduced the risk of Covid-19, including:

  • Reducing symptoms (fatigue, fever, cough, sore throat, dyspnea, myalgia, headache).29.30
  • Reducing biomarkers of Covid-19 prognosis (LDH, ferritin, CRP, D-dimer).29-31
  • Reduction in frequency and duration of treatment.30, 31
  • Decreased oxygen supply and ICU support.30, 31
  • Reducing mortality.30, 31

Consumption of curcuminoids and quercetin is reduced due to reduced bioavailability. After oral administration, the amount of blood and blood vessels in the stomach decreases. This is probably due to poor digestion and rapid metabolism. However, piperine, a major alkaloid in black pepper, enhances the bioactivity of curcuminoids and quercetin,32,33 up to 2,000% of the population.34

Interestingly, black pepper is used in traditional curries along with turmeric (a source of curcuminoid) and traditional drinks along with spices and tea leaves (a source of quercetin)! Only one in eight Covid contains piperine-based curcuminoids.3 However, many studies now include piperine. In addition to improving the bioactivity of certain foods, piperine can have beneficial effects on the body in itself.35, 36

Interestingly, quercetin enhances the absorption of curcumin and improves its vivo pharmacokinetics.37 As a result, quercetin + curcumin is more potent than the others.38 However, the combination of curcuminoids containing piperine and quercetin has a strong correlation and bioactivity.39

Dietary system in Covid-19?

Special diets for Covid-19 symptomology and pathology are well-known for future medical care and patients for a number of reasons:
