According to DeadlineCastle Rock Entertainment is moving forward with It’s Spinal Tap II. This is a sequel to Rob Reiner’s famous, often quoted, cult-favorite rock mockumentary from 1984 – This Is Spinal Tap.
Reiner will return once again as both the real-life director and playing a role in the movie of filmmaker Marty DiBergi, the man behind the camera of the mocckumentary itself.
The three lead characters of bandmates David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) are all back to form the heavy metal band.
Tony Hendra, who played the band’s manager Ian Faith, has passed away in reality but this will be worked into the storyline. Ian’s widow will inherit a contract that says Spinal Tap owe them one more concert.
She threatens to sue if they don’t do it, forcing the band to reunite for the concert. After years apart they are forced to deal with each other to satisfy their contract. Guest, McKean, Reiner, and Shearer all worked on the new storyline together. Frank Marshall will produce.
The original remains a critical favorite and has been preserved in the National Film Registry.
It’s Spinal Tap II will target a March 10th, 2024 release.
