SCOTS are set to be blasted with thunder and lightning as a yellow weather warning is issued across the country.

Met Office chiefs have warned that thunderstorms are to bring heavy rain and hail across the south of Scotland.

The thunderstorm warning, which is expected to cause train and bus disruption, is in force from 1pm today until 10pm tonight.

It extends from Edinburgh and the east cost down to Kelso and across to Peebles and Lockerbie.

Damage from lightning strikes, hail or strong winds is also likely, forecasters have said.

Commuters have also been told spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

And some communities might even become cut off if roads flood.

Experts have warned that affected areas will see heavy showers and thunderstorms will become more frequent from mid mid through through until the early evening.

It is likely to produce come locally torrential rain with 20-30mm possible in just one or two hours.

However other areas across Scotland will remain dry.

The heavy rain is expected to continue on through Saturday morning across the west from Tiree through to Glasgow and Perth with dry overcast across the east.

Light rain and sunny spells are set to sweep across the country in the afternoon.

But areas including Helensburgh and Creiff will see thunderstorms in the early evening.

Forecasters have predicted that the east coast will see sunshine on Sunday afternoon while the west will be hit with more showers.

Glasgow, Stirling and Fort William are expected to see the worst of the wet weather with heavy rain and showers.

But by Sunday night it’s meant to turn into light showers with sunny spells across the country.
