NASA attempts to clear rock samples obstructing Perseverance rover's robotic arm

Rover stopped its collection work late last month after hitting a rock in an attempt to place a stone.

The brutal Red Planet seems to be testing whether NASA’s Perseverance rover is fulfilling its name. The ship was drilling and assembling its sixth model of the Martian stone late last month when other rocks broke the titanium stone used for the collection, blocking the movement of its 7-foot-long arm.

“I recently grabbed my sixth rock band and encountered another problem. It seems like some small debris is preventing my robot arm from allowing the tube to seal / store,” said a Twitter account of the large robot ending.

“Pictures and more are coming. #SamplingMars wants to persevere,” members of his mission group wrote last Friday.

At first, the work progressed well. Efforts have lost models from the Martian rock outcrop called Issole. Next, the rover stopped its collection process after hitting the pump in an attempt to set the model.

“By moving a small piece that has a pattern in the rover’s bit carousel (which holds bits and passes through the tubes to the tubes inside the rover), our sensors showed a distortion,” he wrote Louise Jandura, senior engineer for sampling and caching, in a blog post last Friday.

You are changing has been sent yesterday, Jennifer Trosper, Project Manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said the team has come up with a helpful solution, like a book, to start and restore the contents of Sample Tube 261 around the world:

“We sent orders yesterday, and later today the robotic arm of a rover points to the end of Mars’ upper tube and allows gravity to do more.

“While these have not been designed or programmed to be fixed, it is clear that losing the core of an open tube is a straightforward process.”

Orders are being sent later today to turn the carousel, first slowly and then quickly, said the post, adding that the work should be done over the weekend.

Perseverance can remain on the Issole for weeks depending on whether the scientists decide to repair it.

NASA found out what happened last week when the Perseverance mission team asked the pilot to separate the drill and the carousel model. The photos sent showed what we now know: the stored specimens collapsed, which caused the drill to slip into the carousel.

“Recently downloaded photos confirm that inside the carousel are several pieces of large debris,” Jandura wrote. The team suspects rocks and regoliths (stones and dust) fell from the sample tube during collection.

However, it was not the time to consider questions about rover. The makers of the carousel had planned to make this possible, wrote Jandura, but wanted to take it regularly to ensure that the stones “could come out orderly and systematically”.

When the Perseverance team is doing things slowly and smoothly, their rover looks great.

“By the end of the week, we should be ready to try to remove the stones in my carousel to get back to #SamplingMars. In the meantime, I’m learning about the rocks around me in detail,” the group wrote on Jan 11.

These models are to be brought to the world in the next decade. Seitah Rocks is famous for its history, according to to a NASA blog post from November:

“In studying the proportions of the slopes, we saw that the Séítah rocks are probably the oldest extant found in the valley of Jeero.

That is why Séítah represents the beginning of the history of accessibility and offers the opportunity to be available only once to explore the evolutionary growth of space, ”said the post.
