India-China trade grows to record USD 125 billion in 2021 despite tensions in eastern Ladakh

India has been expressing its concern over the growing trade deficit with China for more than a decade and called on Beijing to open its own IT and pharmaceutical markets in India.

Observers say much of China’s exports this year to India have come as a result of India’s imports of medical supplies and pharmaceutical equipment, which are on the rise due to the second increase in COVID-19 and the spread of the virus in the country.

The border clashes between the Indian and Chinese forces began on May 5 last year following fierce fighting in Lake Pangong and both sides have advanced their operations in pursuit of thousands of troops and weapons.

As a result of several military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed a separate operation in the region of Gogra in August and north and south of Lake Pangong in February.

The two groups held 14 rounds on January 12 to resolve the dispute in the remaining areas and agreed to hold new talks soon.

Each division currently has about 50,000 to 60,000 soldiers according to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the mountainous region.
