Girl, 8, struck by stray bullet in Little Village shooting

An 8-year-old girl was shot dead on Saturday afternoon in Little Village which officials said was the act of a man who was also injured.

The girl was walking with her supervisor around 2:45 pm when a man shot a 26-year-old man as he was leaving a store in a 3900 block on West 26th Street, Chicago police said.

The guard heard gunshots and saw the girl hit on the head, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man exiting the store was beaten in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was also in critical condition, police said.

Police initially said the girl was 5 years old.

When investigators investigated Saturday evening, records showed that more than a dozen bullets were found at the scene. The rear window of the minivan was smashed to pieces by gunfire.
